Star Wars: The Force Awakens – how to enjoy it spoiler free!

By Craig Gunn 17/12/2015

It’s been ten years since the last Star Wars blockbuster movie or thirty-two years if you don’t count the prequels (as most fans of the original don’t). There’s been animations, merchandise, computer games, comic books, fan-made re-edits and outlandish theories about the galaxy far far away.

Stormtrooper Costumes (D) of Episode VI The Return of the Jedi (1983) and Stormtrooper of the First Order (G) of episode VII The Force Awakens (2015) in the Star Wars Identities…

Excitement is rife with Star Wars fans; however there is also the dreaded feeling of anxiety. The one word that everybody fears. It can ambush you at any time; it seems innocuous but it can ultimately be devastating! SPOILERS! Just one sentence uttered or written down can undo the years of suspense for one of the most anticipated movies of all time.

Here are a few tips on how to avoid the spoilers amongst the hype this weekend:

Social Media Blackout

If you really want to watch The Force Awakens spoiler free, this is probably the most obvious thing to do. No matter how many ‘friends’ you have on Facebook there is always that one person who wants to ruin it for the rest of us. They are the worst type of person and must be avoided at all costs. If this means sacrificing finding out what your friend had for breakfast in the morning, or how someone’s gym ‘sesh’ went, then it has to be done.

Avoid The Early Reviews

Reading reviews before going to watch a movie is considered sensible in most cases; you want to find out if it will be worth going to watch. However, there are probably a few movies in your lifetime that you will go to see no matter what. This is one of those movies. We don’t want to hear from anyone, anywhere whether the movie is good, bad, classic, amazing or terrible or any other superlatives bloggers, journalists and Twitter-ites want to use. A positive review will leave you with expectations and bad ones will put you in a negative mindset.

Be Vigilant

You can avoid the internet until you have watched the movie but no matter how hard we try we still have to interact with the general public on a day-to-day basis. There is no ‘block’ feature or ‘mute’ button on members of the public or on transport. If you hear anyone mention Star Wars it is acceptable to stick your fingers in your ears and go through the syllables from Sound of Music to drown out the chatter.

If you have any reservations about the movie, try and approach it with an open mind. You may have watched the theories on the storyline and predictions on what might happen already. Remember that J.J Abrams has been given this huge responsibility – the guy that gave us Lost – and no one knew what was going on there, not even the actors!

Follow these steps and you’ll be able to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoiler free. And it goes without saying once you have watched it don’t spoil it for anyone else.
