Media Training

Our bespoke courses are taught by specialist Journalist Media Trainers and take place at the Press Association’s broadcast studios.  Courses cover everything from constructing powerful key messageshandling tricky questions and controlling an interview, to strategies for overcoming nerves and looking and sounding confident on camera. Our media training is ideal for:

    Why do it? Learn how to perform with confidence and authority in press, radio and TV interviews, at press conferences and in other interactions with journalists.

    Who’s it for? Senior executives and spokespeople at beginner, intermediate or advanced levels.

    What the courses cover You’ll carry out five press, radio and TV practical exercises in Full Bespoke courses and three of these in Refresher or Intermediate courses.  These mock interviews are designed from scratch to test and enhance existing skills and to develop new ones. The theory part of the training covers key messages, techniques for controlling an interview and handling tricky questions, voice coaching and body language.

    The workshop will be led by TNR’s Director of Media Training, Bridgid Nzekwu. Bridgid coaches senior spokespeople for brands and the public sector ahead of broadcast interviews, Select Committee appearances and panel discussions such as Question Time. Bridgid is best known as a former presenter and reporter for Channel 4 News and she continues to present news bulletins for ITV News as a freelance anchor.

    How long is the workshop? 

    Workshops run from 9am to 1pm at the Press Association in Victoria in Central London (292 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, SW1V 1AE).

    How many delegates?

    The workshop is taught in groups of 6 delegates.

    What does the workshop cover?

    Theory and practical elements that give delegates the essential skills for performing confidently in media interviews, including:

    • How to work effectively with journalists
    • Crafting key messages
    • How to handle tricky questions
    • The best way to prepare for media interviews
    • The difference between print and broadcast
    • Real-life case studies
    • Voice and body language tips
    • On-camera TV interview (followed by playback and critique)

    Why do it? Develop the ability to confidently brief journalists, manage TV crews on your own site, support senior executives before they give press, radio and TV interviews, and stand in for a spokesperson in an interview.

    Who’s it for? Members of press and communications teams.

    What the course covers The changing media landscape, working with TV crews on your own site, constructing effective messages, handling tricky questions, briefing a spokesperson, rehearsing a spokesperson, giving feedback and role play. You’ll also do an on-camera TV sound bite exercise.

    Why do it? Learn how to speak in public with confidence and impact

    Who’s it for? Anyone who has to give presentations, give speeches or participate in panel discussions

    What the courses cover: You’ll deliver a pre-prepared presentation or speech which will be recorded for playback.  After critique, theory and case-studies, you’ll re-deliver the speech/presentation using what you’ve learned.  Theory includes: reading the room; body language; narrative structure; controlling nerves; non-verbal cues; voice conditioning exercises.

    Broadcast Skills for Journalists

    Masterclass

    Why do it? You need to do radio and TV interviews or live 2-ways; Facebook Live recordings; videos for social media and online; newspaper reviews; panels etc.

    Who’s it for?  Any journalist who needs to acquire or refresh broadcast skills.

    What the course covers You’ll be trained by an experienced national TV presenter/reporter and learn the techniques for communicating with confidence and authority in broadcast interviews.  You will complete mock radio and TV exercises, which are recorded for playback and critique.  The session also covers:  voice training (including pace, language, tone) and  on- camera performance ( including body language, attire, appearance).

We also offer a variety of open courses aimed at individuals and organisations who are after the same high quality of training, but have a limited budget and are happy to train in a mixed-group environment.
