How to promote your Cannes Festival events and parties from our Picture Editor…
Whilst the main chunk of the annual ‘Awards Season’ is now done and dusted – with mistakes at the Oscars, tributes at the Brits and politics at the Globes – TNR is preparing to return to the South of France for the annual ‘Festival De Cannes’, which is often the place to discover what’s next for the real La La Land.
At last year’s festival we were busy creating content for the announcement of Magnum’s ‘Release the Beast’ range with a press conference to unveil a photo campaign by fashion photographers Mert & Marcus featuring global superstar and model Kendall Jenner.
We created video and photography including behind the scenes interviews, photo calls and a press conference for editorial and social media use in the UK and internationally, and our crew of 14 turned it all around in just 1 day.
Here’s some quick-fire insight from our Picture Editor Phoebe Jenner…
What was your experience like in Cannes?
It was very busy and went very quickly but overall a huge success and great to see team TNR in action! I frequently had to duck out of the edit suite clutching my laptop and winding my way through the party to get approvals.
Was it easy to get the images approved?
When it came to getting approvals from Kendall and Kris it was surprisingly easy, they were both super chilled out and extremely professional – Kris was busy working away on her emails and Kendall was happily chatting away to everyone in the room!
What logistics are worth considering when picture editing on site?
I’d say being mobile is key so a small laptop that can be carried around easily works best for me. Often you’ll get a nod or a thumbs-up from someone to signal that the talent is ready to see you and you have to be ready at the drop of a hat.
What is the ‘one’ thing that makes you like a ‘picture’?
I’m a stickler for composition!
What are the benefits of having a photography manager and picture editor on site?
The two roles are actually quite different, and both integral to making sure a project runs smoothly, with the photography manager leading the shoot, running card from the photographers and working alongside the client to direct the shoot, whilst the editor finds themselves sitting in a small cubby hole with a laptop, busily cropping and lighting to get the perfect image.
How has social media changed the way you picture edit?
For this project social media was quite a big part, we were producing specific content for Magnum’s online channels. For me it doesn’t make a huge amount of difference as I use social media a lot in my personal life but it has certainly added another level to our processes when editing. With social we’re allowed to be more creative so colours can be made to pop and flaws can be fixed, which is a massive no no when working editorially – especially for Press Association who have very strong ethics about telling the truth through words, pictures and video!
The results we received from our whistle stop trip were great with video, gifs and Instagram posts distributed through the PA Wire resulting in global coverage on AOL, Daily Star, Huffington Post, BT, Yahoo News, OK! MailOnline, Irish Examiner, CelebBuzz, Glamour Magazine and many more! As well as 70 million views on Kendall Jenner’s personal Instagram.
